Q&A with Deckie Sam

The Kimberley

Sam Belotti joined the Great Escape Charter Company as a deckhand earlier in the season, definitely a character and well liked by crew and guests alike, Sam has given us a little insight on why he loves the Kimberley and why he might stick around working for GE in this little Q&A.

1) WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE LOCATION IN THE KIMBERLEY AND WHY?

There are many locations and secret hideaways in the Kimberley each one breathtaking and unique in their own right and I guess that is why I love returning trip after trip.  My favourite spot along this pristine coastline is the faultless Prince regent river. When we are travelling the Kimberley coast and reach the Prince Regent River it opens up many excursion options from bottom fishing for the mouth-watering Mangrove jack or trying to catch the elusive barra! There is also the option of shooting off in the helicopter to hidden Aboriginal art sites and feeling like you’re the only ones to have been there ! AND...if that wasn’t enough there is an amazing heli picnic to an incredible waterfall.  Yes definitely the Prince Regent!

2) WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT WORKING ABOARD GREAT ESCAPE AND WHY?

I have worked on a few charter vessels in the Kimberley in my short career so far but none like the Great Escape. The team of people that we call our crew quickly become an ever-changing family as we work so closely in many different roles ensuring our guests have the adventure experience of  a life time!

One of the best things about Great Escape is all the crew have a true passion for their chosen field and can’t wait to express their love for the Kimberley and their local knowledge whether it be aboriginal art, local history or the ever-changing tidal movements. All the crew have a strong camaraderie onboard and being able to get up and enjoy fun and laughter from 5.30amis brilliant.

3) WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT SO FAR THIS YEAR?

Working in the Kimberley is a memorable experience in itself and feels like a dream most of the time, but my most memorable experience was just recently while on a 7 day southern Kimberley adventure while trolling for queens and giant trevally  we came across a pod of whales nearby, I quickly grabbed the groups attention, reeled our lines in and cruised over slowly to the mother and calf gracefully playing around.  They both decided to fully breach several times which in a small open boat within 20 feet seemed pretty amazing for me let alone guests that had come as far as Canada to see these incredible animals in their natural environment. Sharing moments like these in an isolated environment with amazing people is  super memorable.

4) FUNNIEST MOMENT ONBOARD GE SO FAR ?

It would have to be the fun we crew get up to in the galley some nights! Recently a memorable cake facing episode I was solely responsible for...luckily Liz was a good sport!  It was hilarious. The pictures below are worth a thousand words!

5) WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU COULDNT LIVE WITH OUT ABOARD MV GREAT ESCAPE ?

Would definitely have to be fishing in secret spots, catching enough for dinner then filleting with my own knife!
